Photo and Video Quality: iPhone 14
With the iPhone 14 there’s a strong emphasis on photo and video quality here, and while it probably isn’t going to top the very camera-heavy chart of the best camera phones around, it certainly shouldn’t be underestimated for everyday photographers and content creators. The 12MP main shooter has a sharper and wider f/1.6 aperture, while better low-light performance is also promised by the Photonic Engine, although this still sacrifices focus peaking on both the f/2.4 ultra-wide lens of yore.
In daylight the images are very sharp with accurate colors, great contrast, and natural skin tones. A larger main camera sensor and a faster-aperture lens help the iPhone 14 to capture brighter, more detailed images in low light and at night over its predecessor. The ultra-wide lens also does better in the dark, suffering from fewer losses of information and less noise.
It has the first ever auto focus on a facetime camera making selfies, facetimers and video recordings easier and more consistent.
From a video standpoint, the bright spot of iPhone 14 is 4K recording at either 24, 30 or 60fps with Cinematic Mode in 4K and this new Action Mode which delivers stabilized footage when on the move. The color reproduction is vibrant, there is a strong dynamic range and audio capture was clear.
The iPhone 14 doesn’t include any Pro-level features such as telephoto zoom or ProRAW, but what it does pack in for its class makes the phone an attractive option when it comes to stills and video quality — ideal for everyday moments, social media shots, and casual content creation.
