The March 2011-launched iPad 2 is a huge improvement over the first iPad and helped set the stage for every tablet since. It was slimmer, lighter and speedier — everything the future felt like back then.

The iPad 2, with Apple’s dual-core A5 chip, meant improved performance and snappier app-loading times. It was the first iteration to include both front and rear cameras – turning an iPad into a FaceTime video call machine, as well as enabling basic photographic capture on a tablet. Another plus is that it had a smart cover (smart covers = all-timefavorite )a magnetic flap which would turn the screen on/off automatically.

First released with iOS 4 the iPad 2 can be updated to iOS 9. It became my casual browsing and YouTube machine, e-reader, and even light game playing device. It was a hit in schools and homes as well.

It’s long in the tooth and running a version of Windows that can’t handle most modern apps, but for a lot of people it was their first taste of tablet life. This was the point at which tablets stopped being a tech experiment and became an actual utility.

IPad 2 might be old news, but it demands its credit It was quick, it was solid, it was avant-garde.
