Face ID: Unlock with a Glance

Face ID is Apple’s facial recognition tech that can unlock your iPhone or iPad, authorize payments, and even sign in to some apps with a quick glance. It debuted alongside the iPhone X in 2017, replacing the home button and Touch ID on most newer models.

How does it work? Face ID is enabled by the TrueDepth camera and is simple to set up. It projects and reads more than 30,000 invisible dots (a.k.a., the dot project) with infrared light in a 3D pattern around your face using a front-facing miniature camera in order to work its magic. This is a far more secure technology as it maps your individual facial features, as opposed to just a photo. In fact, 1 in gozillion (according to Apple).

Face ID works in the dark, learns to detect you even with a beard or glasses, and masks can be supported by newer iOS versions using partial face data.

Face ID does much more than unlock your phone, too — it authorizes Apple Pay purchases, logs into secure apps like banking, and fills in your passwords for you.

Face ID is quick, the most secure and easy to use method of logging in. It fits into your life so easily you may as well call it a habit — and that is the entire idea.
