iOS 16 was announced on June 6, 2022 at WWDC 2022 and released to the general public on September 12, 2022. This version also represented one of the largest visual changes ever made to the lock screen — introducing a level of personalization and functionality seen for the very first time on an iPhone. Although there were a number of minor system-wide changes, most notably improvements to user interaction, privacy features, and communication tools in iOS 16.

For the Photos app, Apple improved duplicate detection and sorting tools and added editing capabilties that would have given consumers more control over organizing and perfecting their libraries.
Privacy & Safety: Stronger Protections
Security and privacy: Apple continued to focus on user security and privacy and made a lot of improvements with iOS 16.
Safety Check: A feature that, in addition to identifying users with abusive behaviors, rapidly displays any location sharing as well as entitlements within the home.

While the fitness app made its way to all iPhone users, Apple Watch owners saw even more — this was the day when watchOS 2 was unveiled.
