At this point, iOS 15 was announced in the WWDC 2021 keynote (June 7, 2021) and released to the public on September 20, 2021. The most important change in this update was to help users “Connect and be more… present, and Active”, by meaning of relevant changes across Communication, Privacy, Multitasking and Intelligence system.
Apple extended support to every device that could run iOS 14, including models as old as the iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus and the first-generation iPhone SE (thus proving yet again its reputation for long-term software support).
Well FaceTime: It is the Most Human and Inclusive Experience to be Done
Apple reimagines the way we connect over FaceTime in iOS 15 with its biggest ever update, focusing on spatial connection and cross-platform availability.
Voices seemed to come from the direction a person was visible on screen thanks (I’m taking a wild guess) Spatial Audio.
The earbuds allowed for selective audio filtering with Voice Isolation and Wide Spectrum modes — the former which clarified calls, and the latter richer ambient sound.
Portrait Mode and Grid View gave our group calls a little more organization and visual emphasis.
With FaceTime Links, it enabled users to plan and link calls — Android and Windows join for the very first time through web browsers in using FaceTime.
This made FaceTime more in line with a real video conferencing platform, for casual and professional usage.
Personal Do Not Disturb Mode
Focus was a new way to filter notifications and apps based on time of day or context:
Focus profiles were included as standard such as Work, Personal, Sleep and Do Not Disturb (plus the ability to add your own).
Focusies could be set to turn on automatically by time, location, or application usage.
Home Screens could be set to display different apps and widgets depending on the Focus active in that moment.
In Messages, a status indicator would inform contacts that notifications were silenced.
Focus Mode was Apple’s way of intending to ensure users have a better shot focusing on what really needed their attention in an increasingly noisy digital world.
Notifications: Refined and Prioritized
A Complete Visual and Functional Redesign of Notifications
Notification Summary, meanwhile, bundled less important alerts and delivered them at predictable times so users could catch up without being constantly bombarded.
Better support for contact photos and app icons were clearer.
But time-sensitive notifications, such as deliveries or reminders, would be able to break through the Focus filter when permitted.
It resurfaces the previous Messages and Shared with You: Joined discussions
In Messages, Apple went beyond chat to weave shared content into the entire system.
Links, photos and music shared in Messages appeared right inside apps like Safari, Photos, Apple Music and News with Shared with You.
Which made it convenient to watch content that was shared and didn’t need us to scroll through our old conversations.
These images allowed people to have a more visual and dynamic experience when using Messages: advanced photo collages, greater ease with saving options than ever before (in fact you could save videos sent to you straight into your Camera Roll) and an even smoother interface.
Safari: A Controversial Redesign
IOS 15 revamps Safari, unveils tab bar at bottom of screen for one-handed use
They packed tabs in tighter, made them more swipeable, and began automatically grouping open tabs into Tab Groups that synced across devices.
It combined the address bar and browser controls into a single tab line.
For the first time, iOS also gained support for web extensions and further customizations that are more desktop-class than before.
A large number switched back to the top address bar after a mixed reception.
The new layout saw more changes introduced with additional features being added in but not leaving long terms users divided due to its unorthodox change of the layout.
Live Text & Visual Lookup : More Intelligent Image Interaction
What is Live Text?
Copy, Translate & Search Text Within Photos, Screenshots or Camera View
Visual Lookup : Identify landmarks, animals, and more from photos.
Show and Tell, Importants Only notifications and on-device intelligence These features combined truly made iOS 15 grow up quite a bit in the visual content realm, relying more than iPhone ever has on its own brains to better understand what we see every day.
